TriCon Foods - Fast Food Game Medallions (1999)
The release of the Phantom Menace (otherwise known as Episode One) involved a large number of promotions in the U.S. The largest of these was probably the Tricon promotion. Tricon is the corporation that runs Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Taco Bell. The Tricon promotion in the U.S. involved all three restaurants. This was a departure from the promotions for the Special Editions which only ran at Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. In addition to collecting toys at each restaurant, all three restaurants participated in the Defeat the Darkside game where the game "pieces" were small cardboard medallions, similar to pogs. A paper game board was also available at each restaurant so you could keep track of your collection.
At KFC and Taco Bell medallions were received with a drink purchase and were hidden in the lid of the cup. At Pizza Hut, medallions were a bit more expensive to receive as they were found attached to medium and large sized pizza boxes. Medallions could be collected to win prizes or in some cases provided an instant win option that generally won a small food or drink prize.
The checklist below does not include a description of all of the instant win prize pieces. If anyone would like to provide that information it would be helpful. The prices listed are only for the most common medallions. Obviously those that helped win major prizes are not included.
