This is awesome news! I love the 3d sets, and ESB is easily my favorite SW movie- win-win for me.

That's awesome news! ESB is my favorite movie and now 3-D WV woohoo. The one downside I see is this set is scheduled for May 2010....that's only 3 months after Galaxy 5 is suppose to hit. I'm glad we are getting these sets but the spacing is insane........give us atleast 5-6 months to save up more money........uggggg!

Great news!! Of course, they have to mess it up with more sketch cards (somehow I don't think they will be 3D sketches, so why are they included?). I can see why Topps is shooting for May to match the release date of the film 30 years ago, but if they follow their usual pattern they will be lucky to make that date.

Kudos to the Topps team.

Let's be fair, the team at Topps have been listening to collectors.

Collectors asked for new Galaxy sets because those were cool. New Galaxy sets.

Collectors asked for binders. Binders were released.

Collectors asked for ESB 3D (and someday ROTJ 3D) and here it is, ESB 3D, and even if it isn't on time for May, it will be available by the time of Celebration 5 this August in Florida.

Topps is making a HUGE effort to please the core collectors who buy their products. Sure, they make mistakes and aren't perfect, but they are repeatedly giving collectors what they want.

As for including the sketches and other 1:1 kinds of cards, I really think that there is no end to that sort of thing unless it starts losing money. Collectors aren't crazy about these on the secondary market the way they used to be, but that isn't a bad thing. Fun and cool card sets are arriving, and apparently selling well enough for new fun and cool card sets to be created.

Kudos to Topps. Let's give them more positive suggestions (and maybe be less mean and more constructive in our criticisms) and hope they keep listening.

I wonder if there will be 3D cards stuck to the outside of the boxes on this set the way there was for the SW 3D set? That was a bit weird.

Yes, let's hope three years from now we get the ROTJ 3D set. That would be great! I really hope the ESB 3D set does well so Topps will be willing to do the one for ROTJ.

Good job, Topps. Even though we don't always like all the details, keep up the good work with the basic sets.

I'm glad we have a date for this set. Sad to see the inclusion of sketches and signed cards, daft to have these in set such as this.

This set comes far too close to Galaxy 5 for me. I think Topps should have gone with the ESB for the 30th anniversary this year and delayed Galaxy 5 until 2011 as we are sure to have another Clone Wars set this year at some stage aswell. Two premium sets back too back is a killer. Topps should stick to a max of 2 Star Wars sets a year.

Despite that I can't wait for a full 3D set.

I find it humorous that no one (so far) is asking Topps when Episode II and III widevision 3D sets are coming out... Big Grin

Humor aside, I am on the edge of my seat awaiting this ESB set!!

Cool! Looks like no chase cards to track down, with the exception of the sketch cards. Didn't the Star Wars A New Hope set have a Death Star explosion card?

Yes, there was an exploding death star, and at the time that was BIG technology. Huge.

Newer 3D cards can generally be made thinner, and they seem to be able to do more with them than the older ones. Who knows, they might yet announce a few motion cards or something else as a chase.

I'm going to say I'm excited. I'm also a bit pleased there will be another WV Clone Wars set for the 2nd season. I like the WV better than the standard size for CW. And overall, I can't say I didn't like the first WV CW set.

Considering the 3D chase cards we had with CW Widevision, I can not imagine there will be no chase cards with ESB 3D.

My biggest fear is about the price per pack = something around $4 or $5 should be expected.

I think the old 3D sets had only 2 cards per pack. I would think that would keep the price down at the $2-$3 area.

Well, the ANH set had 63 plus one chase card and three promos, and the TPM set had 46 plus a couple of chase cards and one promo. I would think this new set would fit somewhere within that area.

80 cards would be ideal, because ESB came out in 1980! Wink

But I imagine some other process will be used to decide the number. Usually how many images can convey the film, be made to look good in 3D, etc. Practical reasons.

I've contacted my card distributor and they've promised to let me know the minute Topps releases pricing info to the distributors. I think, as this is a set where folks should definitely buy a box if they can, I will post a one time advertisement to my card distributor at that time. I don't normally post commercial links, but I will post one so folks can consider them. I think the ANH 3D set sold out quickly, I think this one will too.

Hopefully Topps will start to put out more info on this, and on the Galaxy 5 set as they get closer.

Smiler

Motion card option:

Han being lowered onto the torture device.

Han being lowered into carbonite chamber.

Luke jumping up from carbonite chamber.

Asteroid cave monster chasing after the MF.

Yoda raising X-wing from swamp.

Exploding Death Star version 2.

So much potential.

All good choices. I'd also like to see one with the AT-ATs lumbering towards the rebels, or one with the AT-AT about to crush Luke's snowspeeder, or one with Wedge taking down an AT-AT with the harpoon cable. Basically, at least one needs to be AT-AT related Smiler

All good choices. How about:

- Luke taking out the AT-AT and then droping to the snow
- Vader blocking Han's shot and taking his gun/Cloud City
- Luke with Yoda training
- Vaders face turning to Lukes/Dagobah
- Luke flying thru the blast window/Cloud City
- Yoda raising X-wing/Dagobah
or the ultimate...the opening crawl...

Wow, all good ideas! Opening crawl, neat. AT-AT's, how did I leave out the AT-AT's!

Wampa attack would also be a good motion card. So much potential in this set.

The P1 promo card is starting to hit eBay. I bought one earlier today for $5. Didn't want to take a chance waiting to find it for a lower price. I heard this card is available to distributors only.

Distributors only, and about 40 folks on this site who were lucky enough to win one in our contest. I'm not sure how many total cards would have been printed, but there aren't that many card distributors out there.

Topps is very kind to their collectors.

In person, the card is amazingly nice. POP. Plus, turn it side-to-side and the image is great at any angle. Not blurry, not distorted. Just insanely terrific.

Hopefully those who get the card will post here about how cool it is. Smiler And if, somehow, you are lucky enough to get one and don't WANT it (gasp) please trade it here with your fellow collectors before posting it on ebay.

I received the promo Cathy.....thanks again for operating the best card site period! As for the Tim Proctor sketches above, those are awesome. I wish they would have been included in the Hobby set instead. Seems a waste to put them in the retail. They should put the sketches from the artists that do 200+ cards in retail and save the better ones for Hobby!
